“Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field. I'll meet you there.” Rumi, Poet, 13th century Persia
Labels and criteria used to define us are helpful for administrative and social purposes, yet they can also feed division and oppressions, creating a ‘Them’ versus ‘Us’ mentality that contributes to us being judgmental, disconnected, uninformed, ignorant, and detached.
I am tri-cultural with roots in Argentina, Israel and the United States. While enriched by these cultures I also experienced immigration, oppressions and wars finding myself too often between the Them and the Us, not belonging to either.
My personal background and my feelings about human divisions pushed me to embark on a life long search for a Human unifying core. While exploring personal and collective narratives I have come to question all divisions imposed by pre-defined criteria. I seek and find underlying messages that connect us all. By examining the conventional, the acceptable, the norm, I have pushed boundaries, redefined and stretched them, both in my life and in my art.
As an artist I approach a medium in a similar way. Whether I come to it with a thought, a well formed idea or a maquette I am interested in reinventing the medium itself. I approach both stone and clay as a carver, uncovering rather than building up. The tools I use most are manual chisels on stone and my body, a wooden mallet, sticks and a knife on clay. The process engages me physically and emotionally, exhausting and energizing me at the same time. |
